Losing My Religion For Equality

Great read! Some excellent points. Many use religion as a shield to defend their bigotry. What many people don’t realize is that religion is the foundation of discrimination for many different minority groups (most specifically women and the gay community). Many people have realized religious scriptures are not meant to be taken literally in every sense. Some religions (i.e. the reformed Jewish sector) have taken major steps in revising their practices to become more modern. That said, there is a great amount of work to be done for all. I personally struggle with organized religion. I think this article does a great job summarizing why. Also, I have written a related piece here: https://thatssogay.co/brainwashing/the-source-of-crazy/

We’re a little bit in love with President Jimmy Carter today.  Want to know why?  Read on… it’s an oldie, but a goodie. jimmycarterWomen and girls have been discriminated against for too long in a twisted interpretation of the word of God.

I HAVE been a practising Christian all my life and a deacon and Bible teacher for many years. My faith is a source of strength and comfort to me, as religious beliefs are to hundreds of millions of people around the world. So my decision to sever my ties with the Southern Baptist Convention, after six decades, was painful and difficult.

It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the convention’s leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be “subservient” to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons…

This is awesome.  There is right and there is wrong.  Discrimination is and always has been wrong.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of Indiana has gotten plenty of press attention when the Governor of Indiana Mike Pence made it legal to discriminate against the LGBT community (and other minority groups) if that’s what your religion believes in.  There is similar legislation in place now in Arkansas (shocking).  Here is a little nugget of information straight from HRC on their blog.

The wave of anti-LGBT bills filed across the country continues to swell. As of today, lawmakers have introduced more than 85 anti-LGBT bills in 28 state legislatures.

Some state legislative sessions have already drawn to a close, but other state legislatures will be in session for several more weeks or even months.  So far this year 34 anti-LGBT bills in nine states have been defeated or failed to meet key legislative deadlines, but two have passed — one in Arkansas and one in Indiana.

To me, the bottom line is simple.  Religion should not be used to justify hate.  If a religion is preaching hate it’s wrong.  It’s actually that simple.  There is no room for debate here.  Here is the other thing.  We should all know better.  Especially people in the government.

As it turns out, companies are outraged as well.  Apple, Walmart, Salesforce NASCAR and Subaru have all spoken out against the laws  The list of supporters is growing by the hour.  Indiana is facing very real backlash which will ultimately result in a loss of revenue for the state.

In closing, check out this quote…“Discrimination is always wrong, always beneath the dignity of our nation, and always a shameful legacy to leave our children.” – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.  I agree Nancy.  And good for you for making to very clear.

Hope the world wakes up and soon. We have come so far and yet have so much further to go…

Being a good parent

male-nanny

I just had such a great moment with my friend who happens to be a mom with a husband and adorable little boy.  She sent me a picture of her little boy at daycare.  Her son was being held by a gay man who works at the day care.  I’m assuming he is a teacher or teacher’s assistant.  The point of the conversation was for my friend to show me how much her son loves this particular member of the daycare team.

The conversation warmed my heart because there are many people out there that would say “I don’t want a gay man taking care of my little boy at daycare”.  That is sadly the reality of the world we live in.  My friend went on to tell me that there have been parents who have actually complained.  To respect the privacy of my friend, I won’t say which state we are talking about here but let’s just say it isn’t Texas.

This is just one small example of the difference you can make in a child’s life.  Our opinions, the way we talk and the actions we take shape the world our children live in.  Imagine for a moment if you happen to be a gay child growing up and you heard your parents spewing anti-gay propaganda.  What does that do to you? I sadly know all too well what that does to someone and I can tell you it’s not fun.  It’s very easy for people to say “well…I didn’t know any better”.  I disagree.  As an adult and as a parent, it’s your job to know better.

The same can be said for any bigoted comment regarding any group (race, religion, etc.).  It isn’t just a “gay” issue.  That said, this example came up and I  wanted to share.  I am so proud of my friend.   I am so happy there are people like this in the world.  We need more people that “get it”.  Please help do your part.

History in the making

process.php

How amazing is this?!

On 3/6, HRC delivered The People’s Brief to the US Supreme Court.  Over 200,000 people added their names to The People’s Brief which asked the Supreme Court to provide marriage equality to same-sex couples in the United States.  The People’s Brief has more signatories than any amicus brief ever submitted to the Supreme Court.  BAM.

Obergefell v. Hodges is the marriage equality case that will be heard by the Supreme Court on 4/28/15.  This case is a HISTORIC moment in history.  Specifically for gay rights movement.   I had the HONOR of hearing the named plaintiff, Jim Obergefell  speak recently.  Long story short, Jim and his partner were together for 20+ years.   Sadly, Jim’s partner John Arthur was diagnosed with ALS so they had to make some very tough decisions.  Jim and John bravely decided to seal the deal and get married.  They had to leave the state to do this as they couldn’t get married in their own home state of Ohio.   Through the generous help of friends and family, Jim and John flew to Maryland to get married.   Jim required a medical team in order to travel as he was bedridden due to the advancement of ALS.  They married in June of 2013 and John died several months later.

When hearing Jim speak, you can’t help but get emotional.   Here he is grieving as his life partner is diagnosed with a terminal illness.  There are many different rights that come with being married.  One of which is having your partner listed as your surviving spouse on your death certificate.  Something to think about…a heterosexual couple can get married with zero restrictions or conditions.  They are provided all the legal benefits of marriage and their relationship is acknowledged regardless of the duration of their relationship.  Imagine what it must feel like to not have your 20+ year relationship acknowledged by same government you have paid tax to your entire life.
Hopefully, we will soon look back at the fight for marriage equality and say “remember when”.   It feels pretty darn good to be able to say I am on the right side of history 🙂

Remember this day

President Obama and Representative John Lewis led thousands in a commemorative march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Credit Doug Mills/The New York Times

There are few points in one’s life where you can pause and say to yourself, “I am living through history”.  This is one of those moments.  50 years ago, many peaceful protestors were brutally assaulted and beaten because they simply had enough.  Enough hate and unjust discrimination.

Here is a quick history lesson for those that may need one.  Two years after Dr. Martin Luther King’s iconic and historic “I have a dream” speech in Washington, members of the black community linked arms to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge.  They did this knowing what awaiting them on the other side.  They literally were walking into the pits of hell.  I can’t imagine the amount of sheer courage required to do this.  This march is now known as Bloody Sunday due to the violent reaction of the police at the time.  This March was also the first of three aiming to reach Montgomery, Alabama, to demand an end to discrimination against black voters and all such victims of segregation.  The brutal and disgusting actions of the police troopers at the time disgusted many in Washington at the time which helped leaders pass Voting Rights Act five months later.

I have several reasons for highlighting this.  First and foremost, to honor all that walked across that bridge that day.  And acknowledge what happened.  Also, this was a CIVIL RIGHTS issue.  The black community STILL faces many different injustices in the United States.  While things have gotten exponentially better on the surface, there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done. That said, WHAT AN AMAZING SCENE to watch the President of the United States hold hands with people that 50 years ago marched across this very bridge only to be greeted by brutality and hate.  What a difference 50 years can make.  IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

I am a gay man who does not have equal rights in 2015 in the United States and many other countries.  While my struggle is extremely different than the black community’s struggle, there is one thing in common.  We all should have the same human rights and the same civil rights.  There are many that disagree with that statement.  There are many (ignorant people) that get offended when you compare gay rights to black rights.  It’s not about comparing and contrasting.  It’s about highlighting the one commonality.  Civil rights.

I am so proud of my President today.  The picture above literally moved me to tears.  I hope we can all take a moment and reflect.  We all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.  We are all HUMAN.  Ok… I’ll stop now.  Byyyyyeeeeeeeeeee

Please read and share!

The 2015 HRC Corporate Equality Index report has been released.  This is an extremely important report that highlights where companies rank on their treatment of LGBT employees.  I personally think all companies should have a perfect score of 100 as discrimination is a black and white topic where there are no shades of gray here.

We should all be informed on which companies are doing the right thing and as part of such, be mindful on where we conduct business.  That’s a really PC way of saying we shouldn’t support businesses that discriminate.  Companies like Starbucks, Apple, and Google get a perfect score of 100.  The amazing is that the list of perfect scores has been growing at a great rate!

HRC’s “All God’s Children” Ad Features Trailblazing State Legislator Alyce Clarke

What a brilliant campaign by HRC! The All God’s Children spots will run in Mississippi where I am sure you guess…is not the most gay-friendly state in the USA.  Through their community outreach, HRC was able to identify an opportunity to speak to a community and hit the issue at it’s core.  In Mississippi, the issue happened to be a deeply religious community who viewed gay as “sin”.

This campaign starts the conversation and is speaking to people directly and in a way that fits their lives.  HRC has also opened an office in Mississippi and has feet on the street.  GOOD FOR THEM.

Getting involved

I’ve been getting move involved with HRC.  What a great organization.  Talk about people that are working hard on making a difference.  I have also been working on building a LGBT group for the company where I work.  That has been really interesting and highly fulfilling.  Hoping to have that together shortly and get people involved.  You see so many diversity and inclusion groups out there in larger companies.  LGBT groups are hit or miss with some companies.  We see a lot of “women in leadership” type events but I have yet to see a “LGBT leadership summit” at a major corporation.

Back to HRC, let me know if you have any questions or would be interested in becoming more involved.

I’m back

Hi! So sorry I have been MIA for a bit.  Went through a pretty interesting break-up.  I don’t have a space here devoted to relationships but am thinking I should! Net net- always trust your gut.  This past relationship was a lesson in trusting my gut…
Will re-focus my energies on things that matter like maintaining this site and would love to hear more from you guys.

All my love.

Joan Rivers: Our Queen

joan gay

Queen of the gays. Joan was ordained and even officiated a gay marriage in NYC. ❤

We lost an amazing person this week. What can be said about Joan Rivers that hasn’t already been said? She was talented, smart, witty, ahead of her time and plain brilliant. We need more people like Joan Rivers…the world would simply be a better place. She clawed her through a male-dominated business and paved the road for many female comedians while making history. She was outspoken in her support and love for the gays.

Check out a great read from the Huffington Post on 6 of their favorite queer moments with Joan here.

Joan, you will be missed.

IT’S HERE!!!  The RED HOT 2015 Calendar had been launched and we couldn’t be any harder happier.

Ginger-hot-3

We could bore you with loads of pictures, but that seems like a waste of time when there’s a live action film clip of the photo shoots.

And here’s the great thing… if you buy it (it’s £25), you not only get to look at these incredible looking creatures throughout the year, but you’ll also be donating to various anti-bullying charities.

WIN.

Go CVS!

Not only does CVS not sell cigarettes (which shows they care more about health than profits) but they have also included a gay couple (:26 mark) *briefly* in their new commercial.

Good for you CVS :0)

For the record, CVS is not the only pharmacy supporting the gays.  Duane Reade has been the presenting sponsors of the AIDS walk in NYC for some time now.  It’s always nice when corporations do the right thing.

Sexist humor is still sexist

So why is it that straight men who are clearly a 2 on the “hot scale” always have something to say about women? Either they have often made up stories about their escapades with “hot chicks” or they are claiming that women are “crazy”.  I think I may make a version of this video for straight men…Come on girls and gurls! Let’s put these men in their place!

Anti-gay rant by Vine star: Only gay men have HIV

This is…bad.  Nash Grier, a 16-year old Vine star with 8.7 million followers released this video in April but the video has come under the spotlight.  He’s showing a commercial for an HIV home-testing kit  where they say “Testing for HIV, it’s not a gay thing”.  Grier then says “Yes it is! Fag!”
The F word makes me cringe in agony each time I hear it.  Hearing an obnoxious teenage boy screaming it makes it worse somehow.  Grier has released an apology statement saying he is sorry and that he “was young and in a bad place”.   I think it’s safe to say the countless people that have been bullied for their sexual orientation or HIV status are the ones that were in a bad place.

Br4PVgoCEAAp8pG

This type of language is nothing short of a hate-crime.  Virtual in nature but very much real.  We all know HIV is not a “gay thing”.

Here are some facts from the CDC.  Read the full report here.

Transmission Category: From 2008 through 2011, among adult and adolescent males, the annual number of diagnosed HIV infections attributed to male-to-male sexual contact increased. The numbers of infections attributed to injection drug use, to male-to-male sexual contact and injection drug use, and to heterosexual contact decreased. Among adult and adolescent females, the numbers of infections attributed to injection drug use and to heterosexual contact decreased. In 2011, diagnosed infections attributed to male-to-male sexual contact (65%, including male-to-male sexual contact and injection drug use) and those attributed to heterosexual contact (27%) accounted for approximately 92% of diagnosed HIV infections in the United States.

Hope this kids learns his lesson and uses his fame for good.

Same-sex parents are the best!

t1larg.same.sex.parents

File this under DUH and YAASSSSS.

A study by Australia’s University of Melbourne says that children raised by same-sex couples have better health and well-being compared to their peers. More importantly, having same-sex parents does not hurt the child. Please note, “peers” is defined as children with heterosexual parents.

Here are some great highlights from the study.
-Children raised by same-sex parents scored six percent higher in regards to general health and family cohesion.
-Children raised by same-sex parents scored the same as their peers in the following categories: behavior, mental health and self-esteem.

“It appears that same-sex parent families get along well and this has a positive impact on health,” Dr. Simon Crouch from the Jack Brockhoff Child Health and Wellbeing Program, Centre for Health Equity at the University of Melbourne, told CNBC.

One of the most important findings of this study is that same-sex parents focused on skills rather than gender roles to assign parental duties.

Crouch said, “So what this means is that people take on roles that are suited to their skill sets rather than falling into those gender stereotypes,”.   He went on to say, “What this leads to is a more harmonious family unit and therefore feeding on to better health and wellbeing.”

Check out more on the study here.

The point to me isn’t that same-sex parents are better…it’s that having same-sex parents will not harm a child.  A position that far too many have.  There are many different anti-gay adoption and surrogacy laws out there.  Hopefully the scientific proof will help pave the way for some smarter rules and regulations.

Also, check out the 2012 study that said kids with two moms do better in school and are happier in life here.

Great organization to donate your clothes/furniture to

SA

I am in the process of re-furnishing my apartment and have some items that I could easily sell for a profit but let’s be real…ain’t nobody got time for that.  So, I take the route I always take and donate.  I live in downtown Manhattan so lugging around clothes or other bulky items is not an option.  We have a donation pick-up at my building which is great.  Or so I thought.

I just found out that my building uses the Salvation Army who is a fairly anti-gay organization.  And by fairly I mean THEY ARE ANTI-GAY.  Housing Works is a great organization that helps people who have AIDS or HIV.   Here is their mission statement:

OUR MISSION Housing Works is a healing community of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Our mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain our efforts.

They are NYC based and offer furniture pick-up in the area.   Check out their website here.

Click here for some other great places to donate your items to.  This list is from Apartment Therapy.com and they have everything covered from text books to art.

Click here to see why we don’t like the Salvation Army.

A bit of a random post but the moral of the story is that we should all make informed decisions when conducting any sort of business.  The more we support pro-equality businesses, the better.

Good for Burger King!

Burger King launched the Proud Whopper in San Francisco as part of Pride this year.  WELL DONE! Essentially it is a Whopper that comes in rainbow wrapping that reads “We are all the same inside”.  The special Whopper is only available at their Market Street location in San Francisco but hopefully they will take this national soon!

The response has been mixed.  Bigots are of course all upset.  Some have even sworn off Burger King.  Someone was quoted as saying “Do gay people even eat fast food?”.  I don’t think he meant to be funny but that was great.  Show BK some love next time you’re in the mood for some fast food 🙂

Honor Killings in Pakistan Under Fire

Killing Women is A-Ok in Pakistan…

Farzana Parveen was attacked on May 27 outside the High Court building in the eastern city of Lahore by more than two dozen brick-wielding attackers, including her brother and father, for marrying against the wishes of her family. AFP PHOTO/Aamir QURESHI ( AAMIR QURESHI/AFP/Getty Images)

Farzana Parveen was beaten to death on May 27 with bricks by the public including members of her own family for marrying a man of her own choice in Lahore. (AAMIR QURESHI/AFP/Getty Images)

Not sure if you caught this one in the news but this gave me goose bumps.
Farzana Parveen, 25, was murdered by her own family outside a courthouse in Pakistan because they didn’t like her husband.  Actually, they wanted her to marry her first cousin.  This type of murder is known as an “honor kill”.  Her father and other close relatives allegedly murdered Farzana for bringing shame to the family by not honoring their wishes.

There have been a lot of conflicting stories in the news on this but here is a quick summary.
-Her husband (Mohammad Iqbal) killed his former wife to marry her was a free man
-She was pregnant when murdered
-Farazana’s family just come forward and accused her husband of killing her

A lot of twists and turns in this story.  Regardless, this is clearly a human rights issue.   In Pakistan and many other countries, women do not have the same rights as men.  They often are treated as the property of the husband… While this is an extreme case, it should be a wake-up call for people to realize just how bad things could be.  To me, this is a hate-crime.  Had she been a man, things would have been quite different for her.

I think this is a pretty good example of how dangerous it is to promote bigotry through laws.  The connection to me is that women do not have equal rights in Pakistan.  This not so subtle statement promotes hate-crimes.  Sound familiar?

Same Sex Couples Wed in Pennsylvania

After Ruling, Couples Rush to Alter

I’m just reading the news on my flight out to LA and getting all teary eyed over this.   (more…)

Adoption benefits on hold in Utah for same-sex couples

Sean Reyes, Utah’s attorney general and bigot supreme has blocked same-sex couples from adopting.  The reason you ask? Because the courts are still working on “the issue” of same-sex marriage.  So…same-sex couples in Utah are now not allowed to adopt until the little “issue” of equality is addressed.

Reyes went to the Supreme Court and essentially asked them to stop same-sex adoptions until same-sex marriage issues are addressed.  The Supreme Court honored his request.  The icing on the bigot cake is that there are some couples out there that were legally married (when same-sex marriage was legal in Utah) and who are trying to adopt.   Reyes decided these families should not be allowed to adopt… he is literally going after these people one by one.

If you read a lot of the news articles out there on this it is a bit confusing… The net of it is that Reyes has worked hard to make life difficult for same-sex couples.   So the state of Utah is essentially saying that one straight parent is better than two same-sex parents who are in a loving and committed relationship.

Here is my one question for the people who oppose same-sex marriage and adoption.  Are there other issues you should focus on?

Hold on Idaho…equal rights are on hold

New news: Federal appellate court puts Idaho gay marriages on hold. This is pending an appeal. Isn’t it crazy that we can play with civil rights like this?

Yesterday: you have equal rights
Today: just kidding…haha. Oops.

Seriously?

Gotta love Starbucks and Oprah!

You know…I just LOVE Starbucks! Did you see their fabulous Mother’s Day post on their blog? Oprah proclaims “2 moms are better than 1”.  Yes they are!!! Ahhh!!! Mariah hand up in the air and waving.

Of course, some idiots have major issues with this.  As in the past, Starbucks has been criticized for their support of equality.   Bigots are stating that Starbucks “continues to support sexual sin”.   This just shows you how backwards these bigots are.  They can’t even get out of their own way.  Starbucks is NOT promoting sexual anything.  They are promoting EQUALITY and not backing off.

I applaud Starbucks and Oprah.  Good for you for being on the right side of history.

The power of equality

I have been meaning to write about this for some time now.  Former Mozilla CEO Branden Eich caused quite the controversy when his donation to the anti-gay group Yes on 8 surfaced.  Eich donated $1,000 to a group in California that was fighting VERY HARD (and dirty) to make sure California did not allow same-sex marriages.  Proposition 8 (which I lived through while living in Huntington Beach) was about making sure gays couldn’t marry in CA.  It was a ballot to make gay marriage illegal.

You can read about my experience with Prop 8 here.   Mozilla competes directly with Apple’s Safari, Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer internet browser.  All 3 competitors are pro-equality.  Very pro-equality actually.  The folks using the browsers and most importantly developing for the browsers are also pro-equality.  Something very interesting happened.  All of a sudden reality (reality defined as being a bigot is WRONG) slapped Mozilla in the face.

The idiot/bigot CEO was forced to step down shortly after his donation went public and the company received a very ugly and angry reaction from the public and tech industry.  The great news for us all here is that the tide HAS SHIFTED.  People realize that being a bigot is WRONG.  Being anti-gay is WRONG.  You can’t hind behind religion or “personal beliefs”.

Hopefully this will be a lesson to all.  Either get with the program or deal with the repercussions.  There were some jokes made about there being a “gay mafia”.  I don’t think this was the case here.  Now if you’re in fashion, beauty or entertainment…you better watch out for the gay mafia.  We are very powerful and will cut you!! Hey…we have got to stick together and defend ourselves.  And by the way, the gay mafia includes our straight allies.

That is all.

Kisses!

Idaho steps towards equality

U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy Dale struck down the Idaho ban on same sex marriage. That means that gay couples can get married as soon as Friday in Idaho as long as no higher court objects.

The fact that a higher court or any court could object to equal rights is bat shit crazy and another topic all together.

There are currently 17 states in the US plus Washington DC that allow same sex marriage or better said…17 states plus Washington DC promote equality. The other states have their heads up their asses still and have the lowest education rates in the country. It’s a fact. Look it up.

Another fun fact…legally married gay couples have the same federal rights as straight married couples. So we are essentially telling gays in non-gay friendly states that they don’t count.

Congrats to our brothers and sisters in Idaho. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Kisses!

Michael Sam makes history!

Michael Sam hugging his boyfriend in an emotional moment.

Michael Sam hugging his boyfriend in an emotional moment.

Michael Sam has made history by becoming the FIRST openly gay NFL player.  He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams.  So yea, FINALLY we have an openly gay NFL player.  As I have said before and I’ll keep saying it…Honey, there are a bunch of queens running around the field for ALL major sports.

This is the beginning of the ship turning (in the right direction).  Michael had a very emotional reaction when he found out he was drafted and it was caught on camera.  During that reaction, he kissed his partner.  A few notes before I go on.

1.  Many straight players have the EXACT same reaction that is caught on camera.  They cry.
2.  Many straight players kiss their wives or girlfriends on ESPN ALL THE TIME.

Ok, now I’ll continue.  There are idiots out there who are saying that it was inappropriate to show 2 men kissing on ESPN because kids may be watching.  My answer to that is GOOD.  Your kids should be exposed to 2 men kissing.  It is completely normal and fine you moron.  Media has the power to shape what we view as normal.  If you grow up seeing 2 men or 2 women kissing on TV it will be “normal” to you.  Just as it is to see men and women kiss.

This just shows how some people simply don’t live in reality.  To say that it is inappropriate to show 2 men kissing on TV is discrimination in it’s purest form.  The sad thing is that many people just don’t see that.  Why is it ok to see half naked women on almost every ad out there? Why is it ok to see men and women kiss on ads everyday?

Some folks in the NFL have put their foots in their mouths already by tweeting bigoted comments.  The NFL has fined them and done the right thing.   Don Jones is one of the idiots who showed the world just how dumb he is by tweeting his dis-approval of the kiss.  He was fined and had to issue a statement apologizing.  Question for you…and for everyone out there.  How would people react if someone tweeted or said something racist about a black man? I think we have all seen what happens (Donald Sterling).   Why is it is any less offensive or wrong to make comments about gay people? It’s the same.  Anyone who says it isn’t is misinformed.  Bigotry is bigotry.

Some food for thought.
Kisses!!

Check out the CNN article on the reactions to the kiss here.

Amazing new album by RuPaul!

RuPaul

So RuPaul has been one of my favorite artists for years now.  I remember showing my mom how to sashay and shante in the kitchen to Ru’s “You Better Work” when I was a little boy 🙂

RuPaul is probably one of the most under-appreciated artists of our time.   Some of her songs are a bit niche in that they speak to the LGBT community very directly (for example, Tranny Chaser…the song is genius) but overall, each album makes you want to get up and DANCE HUNTY!!

Through the years, Ru has come out with some AMAZING albums.  Champion and Glamazon are hands down two of my favorite albums EVER.  You can check out all of Ru’s albums here.  I promise, you’ll ask yourself why these albums were not on the top of the charts.  Download Born Naked here or check it out on Spotify or Amazon.

Born Naked is Ru’s latest and is just GENIUS.  The first song, “Freaky Money” will certainly make you want to get up and dance.   VERY NYC.  “Sissy That Walk” will also get you up and dancing.  What I love about Ru’s albums is that you can listen all the way through and not get bored.  My favorite song on the album is “Let the Music Play”, a duet with Michelle Visage.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

I’ve missed you!

Loves- so sorry I have been MIA.  Balancing schedules has been tough but I am back and ready to write! Please keep following and spreading the word about That’s So Gay!!
Love you all!

He was the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church.  He was 84 and his children are confirming that he has croaked.  He must be in heaven now because that is where people who have dedicated their lives to evil go…
I’ll say it.  The world is better off with him gone.  Here are some lovely tweets from the “Church”

ArkansASS high school refuses to include bio of gay student in yearbook

Image

I hate to say it but this does not surprise me at all.  I have been to AR several times for work and let me tell you…not the most forward thinking place.  I will say…Fayetteville is lovely little town (technically a city) though.

Taylor Ellis is a student at Sheridan High School and was one of seven students asked to write a bio for the yearbook.  Long story short, the school is refusing to publish this bio because he talks about being gay.  Ok…so how is this not discrimination? Would it be ok to not publish a person’s bio because of their race, religion or gender?! It is so hard to imagine how people (even in Arkansas) don’t get this.

HRC has a petition that you can sign here which is calling for the school to add the bio and calling this an ‘act of discriminatory censorship’.  As always, good work HRC.

Lastly, it seems that Sheridan Superintendent Brenda Haynes and Principal Rodney Williams made this decision.

Anti-gay law is struck down in Texas!

Image

This is just fabulous!

Judge Orlando Garcia issued a ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by two couples.  Here is what the wise Judge had to say: “Without a rational relation to a legitimate governmental purpose, state-imposed inequality can find no refuge in our United States Constitution,”.  “These Texas laws deny Plaintiffs access to the institution of marriage and its numerous rights, privileges, and responsibilities for the sole reason that Plaintiffs wish to be married to a person of the same sex.”.  PREACH!!! Yes! It is so nice to read about people that get logic and reason.  It is truly lost these days.

In 2005, voters in Texas proved that Texans are really as dumb as we all think they are when voters passed the anti-gay marriage law.  76% of voters to be exact.  Is it possible to give the same 76% of people a GED test to see if they pass?  Just sayin…

So this is all good right? Not according to idiot supreme, Governor Rick Perry.  Here is a little statement from Dick…sorry, I mean Rick.  “Texans spoke loud and clear by overwhelmingly voting to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman in our Constitution, and it is not the role of the federal government to overturn the will of our citizens,” he went on to say, “We will continue to fight for the rights of Texans to self-determine the laws of our state.”

Hey Rick…you moron.  It’s kind of silly to talk about rights when you are taking the rights away from others.  You can’t make this stuff up.

So yay for Texas for now.  Rick Perry can eat it.

Kisses!

Anti-gay law gets veto

Governor Brewer vetoed Arizona’s proposed anti-gay bill

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer just did the right think and vetoes a bill that would have PROMOTED discrimination in Arizona.  Senate Bill 1062 would have allowed businesses to deny service to gays and lesbians claiming “religious beliefs”.  You have got to love how religion is being used by bigots (yet again) to promote discrimination.

I respect Governor Brewer for her position.  She said that she made the right choice for Arizona and I agree! Many republicans have come out against this horrific bill which is nice to see.  People are slowly getting their heads out of their asses.

Brewer said, “I call them as I see them, despite the cheers or the boos from the crowd,” and alled the bill “broadly worded”.  She went on to say, “To the supporters of the legislation, I want you to know that I understand that long-held norms about marriage and family are being challenged as never before. Our society is undergoing many dramatic changes,”

She went on to say “However, I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. It could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and no one would ever want.  Religious liberty is a core American and Arizona value, so is non-discrimination.” <———— YAAASSSSSSS

This makes me smile.

A classic Rick Perry Moment

Reading the news today and reading the name Rick Perry made me throw up a little in my mouth…I actually forgot why I think this man is such an idiot. Here is a really quick reminder.

Congrats Jason Collins!

Image

Isn’t this just heartwarming!?? We officially have our first openly gay NBA player! This is major.  Jason recently made headlines when he came out and is now making history.  Jason will join the Brooklyn Nets <— That’s right New York!!! Yaaaasss!!! Another reason to love NYC…sorry, I digress.  I apologize for my gay glitter outburst.  Here is what the Nets GM Billy King had to say, “The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision,”.  “We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract.” <— Yaaasssss!!!!! Oops.  Sorry… Ok.  Back to the professional writing.

Have you heard of Athlete Ally? They are a great organization that supports the LGBT community as it pertains to professional sports/athletes.  Fabulous organization.  Check them out.  Their executive director released the following statement:  “We are entering a new era of inclusion with Jason Collins, the Brooklyn Nets and the NBA at the forefront,”.  “Jason may be the first, but he’s not the last. It’s because of him and the unprecedented leadership of professional leagues like the NBA that we’ll see more and more LGBT athletes at all levels of competition.”.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that there are plenty of gay or bi-sexual athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB and so on…by the way, first-hand experience doesn’t mean I had relations with them! Get your mind out of the gutter! And while I’m at it, I can also tell you that organizations like the MLB for example are quite quick to dish out nondisclosure to silence anyone who may or may not have knowledge that a player is gay.

Back to Jason.  So happy for him.  This is one small step but a step in the right direction.

Kisses!

LOVE for the 11-year bullied boy who attempted suicide

Image

This is just amazing.  The You Will Rise project is a a blog that is dedicated to sharing stories through art and empowering folks that were bullied.    They started an ArtForMichael blog that is art specifically for Michael Morones who was bullied at school by kids for liking the TV show My Little Pony.  Michael later attempted to take his own life and is still in critical condition.  I wrote about that horrible sad store here.
This is a heartwarming effort to make a tragic situation a little less tragic.  Let’s all continue to send Michael our best wishes and be sure to check out ArtForMichael

Kudos and a big hug to the folks who started this blog.  This story gets me every time.  I just can’t imagine how this poor boy felt.  At 11.

Please do all that you can to spread awareness.  Gender roles are made up.  We can break the cycle through education and being open-minded.

Attorney General Eric Holder is amazing

Image

Amazing man: Eric Holder

More federal rights coming for same-sex marriages! The new Department of Justice memo instructs federal government lawyers to give same-sex marriages “full and equal recognition, to the greatest extent possible under the law”.   Attorney General Eric Holder will be speaking at a HRC event Saturday and some of the quotes below are from his upcoming speech.

-Some of the effects of the memo include allowing a same-sex spouse to refuse to provide testimony in a civil or criminal case that might violate their marital privileges.  A right that straight-couples currently have.

-Same-sex couples can for bankruptcy together

– Same-sex spouses can visit their federal inmate spouses

-Same-sex couples will be recognized equally in programs like: the Radiation Exposure Compensation Program, the September 11’th Victim Compensation Fund and the Public Safety Officer’s Benefits Program.

-The Public Safety Benefits program means that gay law enforcement officers and firefighters will have the same rights as their straight counterparts.

Holder also said, “This program is one way that we, as a country, stand by the families of those who put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe, and we must never do that selectively,”.  “When any law enforcement officer falls in the line of duty or is gravely injured, the federal government should stand by that hero’s spouse – no matter whether that spouse is straight or gay.”.

Good for you Mr. Attorney General.  I would love for him to run for President some day.  This man is everything a politician should be and an amazing role model for all.

We may have our first openly gay NFL player!

Good for you honey!! Yes!!

Image

Michael Sam

Michael Sam was named a first-team All-American after the 2013 season.  He was the Missouri defensive lineman.  He is also eligible for the 2014 NFL Draft and guess what else?!?!  He just came out of the closet! So this means that he could potentially be the first openly gay player in the NFL.  He is what he had to say to ESPN (and honey, let me tell you.  There are plenty of gays on ESPN already…), “I am an openly, proud gay man,”  “I understand how big this is…It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL.”

The NFL released the following statement: “We admire Michael Sam’s honesty & courage,”  “Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in NFL.”

This is a huge step forward for the NFL.  It’s only a matter of time before the NFL is a big old rainbow 🙂

11-year-old boy attempts suicide after being bullied

Image

Michael Morones

This is so heartbreaking.  An 11-year-old boy tried to take his own life in late January.  Michael Morones was allegedly teased relentlessly by the lids in school  Why you ask? Because he loved to play with the ‘My Little Pony’ toys.  He remains in critical condition and may have sustained permanent brain damage as a result of his suicide attempt.  Additionally, he currently has a tube in his throat.

Here is what his mother had to say to reporters.  I am literally crying as I am reading about this and writing.  “He’s the kid that never walks. He dances everywhere,”.  “He’s so full of energy. He’s always on the move… We won’t know for months how much is going to heal. It could even be years before we find out what potential for healing he has.”.

I have written a good amount about gender roles and how BS it all is.  I have also illustrated examples of how marketers have decided “pink is for girls” and “blue is for boys”.  Check out some of what I have to say here.

Reports are stating that Michael was so upset because kids at school were calling him gay for liking a “girls TV show”.  This is just disgusting.  This is 100% on the parents of those children who are so ignorant and close-minded.  As I have repeatedly mentioned, there is NO SUCH THING as “girls” and “boys” tv shows, toys, colors, etc.  This is a value that marketers place on things to segment consumers and SELL TO THEM.  That is all there is to it.  Then we have gender roles and homophobia which is perpetuated by religion through various propaganda vehicles.

This cycle has GOT TO STOP.  Please help spread this story and share awareness.  Share on social media, tell a friend.  Do your part.

Woman gives her cat away because she thinks it’s gay…

Image

I really can’t.  Apparently a woman in Nigeria claims that her cat was gay so she disowned the cat.  She had the cat for 7 years…she disowned the cat because she claimed the cat had displayed “an un-natural sexual behavior” and that she found it “a contradiction of the laws of nature”.  Saddest of all, not one single person came forward to rescue the cat.  Last year, a dog was put down in Nigeria after the owner has disowned it for believing it was gay.

As you know, Nigeria has some pretty strict anti-gay laws.  Sounds to me like Nigeria could use a bit of an education boost.

Much better

This man is bat-shit crazy!

cecil chao hong kong billionaire

Images from Huffington Post

Yikes!! Cecil Chao, a BILLIONAIRE from Honk Kong is offering $130 MILLION to any man who can “turn his daughter straight”.  This is the kind of stuff that you just can’t make up.  Chao initially offered $65 Million in September of 2012 when his daughter Gigi eloped with her female partner in France.  In January of 2013 he was quoted as saying, “I would not force her to marry a man. But obviously I would, from my point of view, prefer her to be married and to have grandchildren.”.

FYI, so far there have been 20,000 men who have failed at this “task”.

Here is what Gigi had to say to the South China Morning Post, “I don’t think my dad’s offering of any amount of money would be able to attract a man I would find attractive”.  “I would be happy to befriend any man willing to donate huge amounts of money to my charity Faith in Love, provided they don’t mind that I already have a wife. Third and lastly, thank you Daddy, I love you too.”.

Yes HUNTY!! That’s right!! PS Daddy, I love you too is the perfect touch.  I would have done that or gone ape-shit angry in my quote.  One of the two.

Needless to say, this shows just how ignorant some people are.  This guy has no idea how offensive and hurtful this is to his daughter.  What a complete d-bag.

Obama and gay

Image

HRC just released an interesting little study.  President Obama apparently has used the word “gay” 272 times in the past 5 years.  That is the most on record for a US President.  This is really a great step forward for our community.  It should be noted that President Clinton came in second place with using the word gay 216 times during his presidency.

Here is what the President of HRC, Chad Griffin had to say, “Words matter an enormous amount, and when President Obama uses his platform to declare that LGBT people are just as American as anyone else, it has a huge and historic effect,”.  “Evidence suggests that when people know us, they don’t want to discriminate against us.”  Chad brings up an excellent point! The more you know…sounds cliché doesn’t it? But it’s so true.
Some other news worth mentioning here.  Republican Presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan never used the word “gay” in any of their presidential remarks.  George W Bush did use gay in a public speech twice! Both times, anti-gay propaganda….uh huh. Here is a bit of advice for the Republican’s in America.  Get your heads out of your asses on social issues if you ever want to be in office again.  You’re embarrassing for this country!! Leave women, gays and all other minorities alone!!!

That is all.  Kisses!

Looking premiers tonight on HBO!

Image

So excited to check it out! The much anticipated show finally airs tonight.   Lots of people are excited about this show as there hasn’t been much in the way of gay series recently.  Looking airs tonight at 10:30 PM on HBO.

Here some information on the show from their official page.

‘Looking’ offers up the unfiltered experiences of three close friends living — and loving — in modern-day San Francisco. Friendship may bind them, but each is at a markedly different point in his journey: Patrick (Jonathan Groff) is the 29-year-old video game designer getting back into the dating world in the wake of his ex’s engagement; aspiring artist Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez), 31, is questioning the idea of monogamy amid a move to domesticate with his boyfriend; and the group’s oldest member — longtime waiter Dom (Murray Bartlett), 39 — is facing middle age with romantic and professional dreams still unfulfilled.

The trio’s stories intertwine and unspool dramatically as they search for happiness and intimacy in an age of unparalleled choices — and rights — for gay men. Also important to the ‘Looking’ mix is the progressive, unpredictable, sexually open culture of the Bay Area, with real San Francisco locations serving as a backdrop for the group’s lives. Rounding out the ‘Looking’ world are a bevy of dynamic gay men including Kevin (Russell Tovey), Lynn (Scott Bakula), and Richie (Raul Castillo), as well as a wide-range of supporting characters like Dom’s roommate Doris (Lauren Weedman), Agustín’s boyfriend Frank (O.T. Fagbenle), and Patrick’s co-worker Owen (Andrew Law).

‘Looking’ was created by Michael Lannan and is executive produced by Sarah Condon (‘Bored to Death’) and Andrew Haigh, who wrote and directed the critically-lauded ‘Weekend.’

Puta (AKA Putin) says gays better leave kids alone!

Image

So I reported earlier this week that Russian President Puta said that gays will be “safe” in Russia during the Olympics.  Well he recently added to that with a small caveat.  They will be safe as long as “they leave the children alone”.  He reminded the press that his anti-gay laws clearly banns gay “propaganda” among minors, gay folks can’t talk to people under 18 about gay rights.

His PR folks are working hard.  He also said that “We have no ban on the non-traditional forms of sexual intercourse among people,”.  “We have the ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia. I want to stress this: propaganda among minors. These are two absolutely different things: a ban on certain relations or the propaganda of such relations.”.  The irony here is that Putin is totally ok with spreading this anti-gay propaganda.  The anti-gay propaganda is what should be illegal.  As for pedophilia, I am pretty sure this is not a gay-only issue.

Well Puta Putin, you may just want to save what little respect you have left and admit you’re a bigot and wrong.  Just sayin.

“Homosexuality is not a civil right, it’s a human wrong”

Image

Idiot and Oklahoma state legislator, Sally Kern

So this lady is interesting. Sally Kern, has said and continues to say some pretty awful things.  Clearly someone who is brainwashed by her religion, she once said that homosexuality is “the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.”.  Hmmm.  Ok.  Well our friend Sally just did it again! Anyone else thinking of Britney Spears Oops I Did It Again?!? Sorry.  I get sidetracked easily.  She just said that homosexuality is not a human right.  Instead, it is “a human wrong”.  She went on to say that people aren’t born gay.  Isn’t it funny when ignorant people speak? She also believes that the earth is only a few thousand years old…Her most recent hate-filled comment is because of the recent rulings stating that banning same-sex marriage is un-constitutional.

I say she should join forces with Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin to join the dumbest women in politics group.  Granted…the group of dumbest men in politics is much bigger.  You know…because men are typically not as smart as women but that’s another story 🙂

Can’t make this stuff up folks.

New film at Sundance Film Festival about a mom’s transition from mom to dad

Image

Yaaassss!! This looks amazing! Here is the official movie description from the Sundance website.

Sixteen-year-old Billie is blindsided by the news that her mother is planning to transition from female to male and that, during this time, Billie will live at her father’s house. Billie and her mother have always been extremely close, so the two make an agreement they will meet every Tuesday during their year apart. As her mother transitions and becomes less emotionally available, Billie covertly explores her own identity and sexuality with two older schoolmates, testing the limits of her own power, desire, and independence.

Director Sophie Hyde’s methodical, but organic, approach to filmmaking results in a deeply authentic, bittersweet, and textured experience. The fictional 52 Tuesdays was shot on a regimen of chronological Tuesdays, allowing the characters to develop and evolve visually and emotionally, their natural highs and lows unfolding before us. The role of technology becomes central as both parent and child use modern tools to document and alter their lives, impelling themselves—and everyone around them—to arrive at a place of naked honesty.
