Being a good parent

male-nanny

I just had such a great moment with my friend who happens to be a mom with a husband and adorable little boy.  She sent me a picture of her little boy at daycare.  Her son was being held by a gay man who works at the day care.  I’m assuming he is a teacher or teacher’s assistant.  The point of the conversation was for my friend to show me how much her son loves this particular member of the daycare team.

The conversation warmed my heart because there are many people out there that would say “I don’t want a gay man taking care of my little boy at daycare”.  That is sadly the reality of the world we live in.  My friend went on to tell me that there have been parents who have actually complained.  To respect the privacy of my friend, I won’t say which state we are talking about here but let’s just say it isn’t Texas.

This is just one small example of the difference you can make in a child’s life.  Our opinions, the way we talk and the actions we take shape the world our children live in.  Imagine for a moment if you happen to be a gay child growing up and you heard your parents spewing anti-gay propaganda.  What does that do to you? I sadly know all too well what that does to someone and I can tell you it’s not fun.  It’s very easy for people to say “well…I didn’t know any better”.  I disagree.  As an adult and as a parent, it’s your job to know better.

The same can be said for any bigoted comment regarding any group (race, religion, etc.).  It isn’t just a “gay” issue.  That said, this example came up and I  wanted to share.  I am so proud of my friend.   I am so happy there are people like this in the world.  We need more people that “get it”.  Please help do your part.

The 2015 HRC Corporate Equality Index report has been released.  This is an extremely important report that highlights where companies rank on their treatment of LGBT employees.  I personally think all companies should have a perfect score of 100 as discrimination is a black and white topic where there are no shades of gray here.

We should all be informed on which companies are doing the right thing and as part of such, be mindful on where we conduct business.  That’s a really PC way of saying we shouldn’t support businesses that discriminate.  Companies like Starbucks, Apple, and Google get a perfect score of 100.  The amazing is that the list of perfect scores has been growing at a great rate!

Take a look and download here.

Gotta love Starbucks and Oprah!

You know…I just LOVE Starbucks! Did you see their fabulous Mother’s Day post on their blog? Oprah proclaims “2 moms are better than 1”.  Yes they are!!! Ahhh!!! Mariah hand up in the air and waving.

Of course, some idiots have major issues with this.  As in the past, Starbucks has been criticized for their support of equality.   Bigots are stating that Starbucks “continues to support sexual sin”.   This just shows you how backwards these bigots are.  They can’t even get out of their own way.  Starbucks is NOT promoting sexual anything.  They are promoting EQUALITY and not backing off.

I applaud Starbucks and Oprah.  Good for you for being on the right side of history.

Obama and gay

Image

HRC just released an interesting little study.  President Obama apparently has used the word “gay” 272 times in the past 5 years.  That is the most on record for a US President.  This is really a great step forward for our community.  It should be noted that President Clinton came in second place with using the word gay 216 times during his presidency.

Here is what the President of HRC, Chad Griffin had to say, “Words matter an enormous amount, and when President Obama uses his platform to declare that LGBT people are just as American as anyone else, it has a huge and historic effect,”.  “Evidence suggests that when people know us, they don’t want to discriminate against us.”  Chad brings up an excellent point! The more you know…sounds cliché doesn’t it? But it’s so true.
Some other news worth mentioning here.  Republican Presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan never used the word “gay” in any of their presidential remarks.  George W Bush did use gay in a public speech twice! Both times, anti-gay propaganda….uh huh. Here is a bit of advice for the Republican’s in America.  Get your heads out of your asses on social issues if you ever want to be in office again.  You’re embarrassing for this country!! Leave women, gays and all other minorities alone!!!

That is all.  Kisses!

This is dumb. Even for a Republican from Texas

Rep. Louie Gohmert (Idiot)

Texas is known for having some interesting characters.  Well Rep. Louie Gohmert just proved that things are certainly bigger in Texas.  Especially idiots.  Gold old Louie said that the judges who passed marriage equality “need some basic plumbing lessons.”.  He had the following to say during a ‘meeting with conservatives’ event, “…Basically, we haven’t seen any biological evidence to support marriage being between a man and a woman…”.  It is so funny when folks who think the world is 2000 years old start talking about biology.  It’s like ok, the world is 2000 years old, God created everything in 7 days and oh yea…biology is great when we can use it to discriminate.

Louie is also known for saying that the gays are causing societies downfall with the “gay agenda”.  More irony.  These people spewing hate talk about agendas… I wonder if they can even spell agenda.

Bottom line, this guy and all his like-minded friends are on the wrong side of history.  Using religion to promote bigotry has been done since religion has been around.  Sadly, it is not religion itself that is the issue.  It’s always the people.

Boy Scouts: Gay is ok

The BSA (Boy Scouts of America) will begin accepting gay youth on 1/1/14. They are hoping this will go over smoothly without much attention. What the hell are they scared of? Rainbows won’t start shooting out of your ass if you aren’t a bigot…don’t worry. Other than some Churches cutting their sponsorships there hasn’t been much bad press for the BSA. The Catholic and and Mormon Church are still on board for now.

I anticipate some crazies will make a fuss out of this. Religious organizations, anti-gay organizations and some conservative groups. Ironically, the people that are always against pro-equality movements are the exact people who should be promoting it.

Here is what I have to say to the BSA. Good job. Took you WAY too long to make this happen but better late than never. Ignore anyone who is opposed to equality and remember that you shouldn’t want bigots supporting you.

It’s about time we let gay youth know they are loved, respected and that they have their place in society.
