ArkansASS high school refuses to include bio of gay student in yearbook

Image

I hate to say it but this does not surprise me at all.  I have been to AR several times for work and let me tell you…not the most forward thinking place.  I will say…Fayetteville is lovely little town (technically a city) though.

Taylor Ellis is a student at Sheridan High School and was one of seven students asked to write a bio for the yearbook.  Long story short, the school is refusing to publish this bio because he talks about being gay.  Ok…so how is this not discrimination? Would it be ok to not publish a person’s bio because of their race, religion or gender?! It is so hard to imagine how people (even in Arkansas) don’t get this.

HRC has a petition that you can sign here which is calling for the school to add the bio and calling this an ‘act of discriminatory censorship’.  As always, good work HRC.

Lastly, it seems that Sheridan Superintendent Brenda Haynes and Principal Rodney Williams made this decision.

Anti-gay law gets veto

Governor Brewer vetoed Arizona’s proposed anti-gay bill

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer just did the right think and vetoes a bill that would have PROMOTED discrimination in Arizona.  Senate Bill 1062 would have allowed businesses to deny service to gays and lesbians claiming “religious beliefs”.  You have got to love how religion is being used by bigots (yet again) to promote discrimination.

I respect Governor Brewer for her position.  She said that she made the right choice for Arizona and I agree! Many republicans have come out against this horrific bill which is nice to see.  People are slowly getting their heads out of their asses.

Brewer said, “I call them as I see them, despite the cheers or the boos from the crowd,” and alled the bill “broadly worded”.  She went on to say, “To the supporters of the legislation, I want you to know that I understand that long-held norms about marriage and family are being challenged as never before. Our society is undergoing many dramatic changes,”

She went on to say “However, I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. It could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and no one would ever want.  Religious liberty is a core American and Arizona value, so is non-discrimination.” <———— YAAASSSSSSS

This makes me smile.

We may have our first openly gay NFL player!

Good for you honey!! Yes!!

Image

Michael Sam

Michael Sam was named a first-team All-American after the 2013 season.  He was the Missouri defensive lineman.  He is also eligible for the 2014 NFL Draft and guess what else?!?!  He just came out of the closet! So this means that he could potentially be the first openly gay player in the NFL.  He is what he had to say to ESPN (and honey, let me tell you.  There are plenty of gays on ESPN already…), “I am an openly, proud gay man,”  “I understand how big this is…It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL.”

The NFL released the following statement: “We admire Michael Sam’s honesty & courage,”  “Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in NFL.”

This is a huge step forward for the NFL.  It’s only a matter of time before the NFL is a big old rainbow 🙂

Obama and gay

Image

HRC just released an interesting little study.  President Obama apparently has used the word “gay” 272 times in the past 5 years.  That is the most on record for a US President.  This is really a great step forward for our community.  It should be noted that President Clinton came in second place with using the word gay 216 times during his presidency.

Here is what the President of HRC, Chad Griffin had to say, “Words matter an enormous amount, and when President Obama uses his platform to declare that LGBT people are just as American as anyone else, it has a huge and historic effect,”.  “Evidence suggests that when people know us, they don’t want to discriminate against us.”  Chad brings up an excellent point! The more you know…sounds cliché doesn’t it? But it’s so true.
Some other news worth mentioning here.  Republican Presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan never used the word “gay” in any of their presidential remarks.  George W Bush did use gay in a public speech twice! Both times, anti-gay propaganda….uh huh. Here is a bit of advice for the Republican’s in America.  Get your heads out of your asses on social issues if you ever want to be in office again.  You’re embarrassing for this country!! Leave women, gays and all other minorities alone!!!

That is all.  Kisses!

Puta (AKA Putin) says gays better leave kids alone!

Image

So I reported earlier this week that Russian President Puta said that gays will be “safe” in Russia during the Olympics.  Well he recently added to that with a small caveat.  They will be safe as long as “they leave the children alone”.  He reminded the press that his anti-gay laws clearly banns gay “propaganda” among minors, gay folks can’t talk to people under 18 about gay rights.

His PR folks are working hard.  He also said that “We have no ban on the non-traditional forms of sexual intercourse among people,”.  “We have the ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia. I want to stress this: propaganda among minors. These are two absolutely different things: a ban on certain relations or the propaganda of such relations.”.  The irony here is that Putin is totally ok with spreading this anti-gay propaganda.  The anti-gay propaganda is what should be illegal.  As for pedophilia, I am pretty sure this is not a gay-only issue.

Well Puta Putin, you may just want to save what little respect you have left and admit you’re a bigot and wrong.  Just sayin.

“Homosexuality is not a civil right, it’s a human wrong”

Image

Idiot and Oklahoma state legislator, Sally Kern

So this lady is interesting. Sally Kern, has said and continues to say some pretty awful things.  Clearly someone who is brainwashed by her religion, she once said that homosexuality is “the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.”.  Hmmm.  Ok.  Well our friend Sally just did it again! Anyone else thinking of Britney Spears Oops I Did It Again?!? Sorry.  I get sidetracked easily.  She just said that homosexuality is not a human right.  Instead, it is “a human wrong”.  She went on to say that people aren’t born gay.  Isn’t it funny when ignorant people speak? She also believes that the earth is only a few thousand years old…Her most recent hate-filled comment is because of the recent rulings stating that banning same-sex marriage is un-constitutional.

I say she should join forces with Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin to join the dumbest women in politics group.  Granted…the group of dumbest men in politics is much bigger.  You know…because men are typically not as smart as women but that’s another story 🙂

Can’t make this stuff up folks.

Kisses!

LOVES IT!

LOVES IT!

“Us” being defined as all the people that are on the right side of history. This includes the GLBT community and all our straight allies.

Think about it

Think about it

Discrimination is discrimination. Period end of story. Stop hiding behind religion.

Marriage equality for Hawaii!

Image

Marriages can begin on 12/2/13!

This is just fabulous!! Finally! Hawaii beats Illinois to become the 15’th state in the United States for marriage equality.   Go Aloha state!
We think marriage equality should be available in all states as it is a civil right but this is most certainly a step in the right direction.  Hopefully we will have federal support soon to provide marriage equality for all 🙂

The United States has some catching up to do with other countries like Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and Uruguay.

Check out this great resource on international marriage equality. http://www.freedomtomarry.org/landscape/entry/c/international

Yay! Senate passes ENDA. Great step but not enough.

Image

ENDA stands for The Employment Nondiscrimination Act.

So this is a nice step forward.  The Senate passed ENDA 64 to 32.  So the Democratic led Senate passed this.  Great right?! Well… it is but it’s not quite good enough to become a law.  Why you ask? Because the Republican led House of Representatives will most likely strike this down.  It is MIND BOGGLING to think that anyone (forget about an educated American) would think it is ok to fire someone because of their sexual orientation.  I mean seriously.  I can’t with these people.

So here is what some people are saying:

“The workplace is simply no place for discrimination,” Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine <– good for her!
“Today is an historic day,” said Harkin. “In 1964, we passed the Civil Rights Act–none of us were here then of course. And then in 1990, we passed the Americans with Disabilities Act–some of us were here at that time. And now we sort of finished the trilogy.”, Democratic Senator Tom Harkin

Here is an interesting little fact for you.  Heather Cronk, co-director of the organization GetEQUAL said “it’s hugely helpful as far as public education goes, since 90% of Americans think this is already law.”.  Ok.  So I don’t think civilians should vote on civil rights…isn’t that what the government is for?? But that’s another post I guess.  If 90% of Americans think this is the law and it isn’t then why don’t those 90% of the Americans say something!?!? I really can’t.

Here are what the opponents have to say. (It took every ounce of restraint I have to not type idiots instead of opponents there)

Opponents say ENDA will have “a chilling effect on free speech as well as religious liberty” by requiring secular businesses who have a moral objection to LGBT people to not discriminate against them. (CNN.com)

The Traditional Values Coalition says passage of ENDA would “hurt kids.”

“Young students in some states are already being confused by transgender teachers,” a fact sheet by the Traditional Values Coalition read. “If ENDA passes, students and children in daycare centers all across the nation will be subjected to individuals experimenting with their gender identities.” (CNN.com)

So this is what it comes down to.  Opponents of equality truly believe that the GLBT community is less than their heterosexual counterparts.  Newsflash, people don’t “experiment” with their gender.  If I were to go and have a freaking surgery and ask for a vagina, trust me…it would be a lot more than experimenting you idiot.  Ok, I am going to reel it in.  The opponents think that by exposing children to a member of the GLBT community it will somehow confuse them.  Ok.  Another newsflash.  Kids don’t give a $hit if someone is straight, gay, bi, trans or purple for that matter.  It is the adults that instill the bigotry and confusion.

So what can you do? Glad you asked.

Contact the House of Representatives.  Tell them to pull it together!

AND/OR call and mail them like a crazy.  Good crazy that is…think rainbows, butterflies and puppies!
